About Me
To my mind, my entire life has been preparing me – or ‘setting the stage’ – to do this work I love. As I see it, there have been two stagehands at work – the personal and the professional narratives – who have co-ordinated their efforts beautifully to make it happen…
Personally
As a highly sensitive and empathic soul I’ve always felt drawn to hear and hold the sacred stories of others. Coupled with this, from age fifteen, I’ve had an insatiable appetite for studying human nature, theories of self-actualisation, spirituality and the underlying causes of human suffering. As a survivor of childhood trauma myself, my younger life was strongly impacted by years of debilitating depression and anxiety. Indeed, this hellish ride into mental unwellness was the subject of my award-winning book, ‘Wobbly: One Woman’s Journey to Onward and Upward’(2010). As a self-confessed Wobbler, it was that journey and the therapy I received to bring significant change that ignited an unshirkable desire to offer support to others similarly suffering.
Professionally
After completing a Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music I worked for decades as a singer and a voice therapist who helped people ‘unlock’ or ‘find their voice’ – both literally and figuratively. Besides the deep-dive study of vocal technique, my initial training exposed me to two intriguing integrative, body-based approaches to optimal human functioning: Feldenkrais and Alexander Technique. As I worked with even the little I knew back then, I observed how any powerful vocal shifts in a singer involved postural adjustments, reorganisation of breath and, at times, a deep emotional release if something new were to be found.
This process - observed time and again - piqued my interest in the body-mind connection and reinforced to me the necessity to work holistically and experientially to address outdated scripts and limiting mindsets that dictate our experience. To this end, for the last 16 years, I have immersed myself in ongoing study to better understand what I saw. But, given my love for learning, I suspect I will continue to study for the rest of my days.
Currently I live in the beautiful hills of Eumundi on the Sunshine Coast, land of the Gubbi Gubbi people. I have been married for 38 years and have recently become a besotted grandmother.
